How to Set Up Your Hookah: Step-by-Step Guide

Setting up a hookah for the first time is easier than it looks. Follow these steps and you will be enjoying smooth, flavourful smoke in minutes.

What You Need
- A hookah (stem, base, bowl, hose)
- Shisha paste or tobacco
- Natural coconut charcoal
- Tongs
- A bit of water

Step 1: Fill the Base
Fill the glass base with water until the stem's downpipe is submerged about 2-3 cm. Too much water makes the smoke hard to pull; too little leaves it harsh. Use room-temperature water for the best flavour.

Step 2: Connect the Stem
Insert the stem into the base and make sure the rubber grommet seals tightly. Attach the hose to the hose port. Test the seal by covering the hose end with your hand and inhaling through the top - if no air leaks, you are good to go.

Step 3: Pack the Bowl
Loosely fill the bowl with shisha paste or tobacco. Do not overpack: the heat needs to circulate through the mixture. Level the top with your fingers and poke a few small holes through the foil or use a heat-management device.

Step 4: Light the Charcoal
Light your coconut charcoal on a stove or with a coal burner until it glows red and stops smoking. Wait for a light grey ash to form before placing it on the bowl with tongs.

Step 5: Let It Warm Up
Give the bowl 2-3 minutes to heat up, then take slow, steady draws. You should see thick clouds within the first few puffs. If the smoke feels harsh, move the charcoal to the edge of the bowl; if there is little smoke, move it closer to the centre.

Cleaning Tip
Rinse the base and hose with warm water after each session and change the water every time. A clean hookah tastes better and lasts longer.
